Scotland is renowned the world over for its beauty, and every year millions of people arrive on these shores to take in the most breathtaking scenery around. From the rolling hills and glens, to the lochs (monsters included) and castles, the country has so many areas of natural and man made beauty that people come back year after year to savour the visual delights, and Edinburgh is at the very centre of this.
Seeing all the splendour doesn’t need to break the bank, in fact some of the best things to do in Edinburgh are actually free, so just take some time to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the sights of this great city.
Edinburgh has so many famous buildings and structures for visitors to see, including the newest addition to the Unesco list of World Heritage sites, the Forth Bridge. With many more iconic buildings and structures including the Walter Scott Monument, Edinburgh Castle and, depending on your viewpoint, the Scottish Parliament, those with a keen interest in architecture will be spoiled for choice for what to see. Rosslyn Chapel on the outskirts of Edinburgh is also right on your doorstep, where you can find out about all the conspiracies that surround this beautifully crafted and mysterious structure. We currently offer Scenic Scotland packages, including to Rosslyn in association with Rabbies Tours.
Edinburgh is blessed with so much natural beauty, from Arthur Seat to the Pentlands for those who like to have a challenging but rewarding hike, to the rivers and canals that flow through the city which add to its distinctive beauty. The Union Canal basin where our EQ2 apartments are situated is a haven of tranquility right in the heart of the city. You also have places like Dean Village, an area so quaint you could hardly believe you are in the centre of one of the major European cities.
If you are visiting on a city break you will want to see all the attractions that make the city so special to the millions who visit every year. Edinburgh is very family friendly all year round, the National Museum is one of the most visited attractions in the whole of the UK, and is completely free, although donations are welcome. You can also visit the most famous residents in Edinburgh Zoo, with the Panda’s Tian Tian and Yang Guang, which translate as Sweetie and Sunshine, hopes are high at present that Tian Tian has conceived, which would mean that Britain could be about to get its first ever Panda cub.
There is also Dynamic Earth, Camera Obscura and many more attractions to visit, if you are visiting with your family then our Family Package can give you the very best that the city has to offer.
Where else in the world can you look out onto a castle while doing your shopping? nowhere is the answer. Edinburgh Castle also lets you know when it’s lunch time by setting off the gun at 1 o’clock every day, if there is sunshine this should mean a picnic in Princes street Gardens, which is the perfect way to relax and rest your feet after visiting the sights and shops of the city.
Edinburgh is home to the largest comedy festival in the world, and laughter makes the world go round, so every August you can be certain that more people are laughing in Edinburgh than anywhere else on the planet. In fact the energy generated through laughter during August would be able to provide the country with power for 8 months (note, this is completely made up).
All you need is a bit of sunshine, although even with grey skies the city has a unique beauty that is unparalleled, so don’t worry if it’s a bit wet outside, or a bit windy, just enjoy the city during your visit.
