What’s On at The Edinburgh Science Festival

The Edinburgh International Science Festival returns for its 30th year with an exciting programme of workshops, discussions and exhibitions exploring ‘Life, The Universe and Everything.’ We are delighted to be offering our guests a 20% discount on any of the adult ticketed events taking place at Summerhall during the festival. This year will mark the 30th anniversary of the Edinburgh International Science Festival with a fun-filled programme of over 200 workshops, discussions and exhibitions. Capturing the Chromosome
Sunday 1st April

This unique workshop lead by Professor Bill Earnshaw from the University of Edinburgh will introduce you to the wonderful world of human cells through cutting-edge research combining art and cell biology. Help to create your very own piece of art, inspired by the images of dividing cells under the microscope.

A Panel of Ice and Fire
Thursday 5th April

Thought fantasy was the opposite of science? Think again! Join comedian and author Helen Keen (The Science of Game of Thrones), Dr Rory Hadden, Senior Lecturer in Fire Investigation at the University of Edinburgh and a whole host of special guests, for an exciting evening of ice, fire, fantasy and fun.

The £1 Meal
Friday 6th April

Why is one of the wealthiest countries in the world failing to feed its people? How do we maintain a healthy diet, even on a low budget? Over a delicious three-course meal that costs less than £1, a panel of experts on nutrition, food policy and social activism will answer these questions and discuss how we can create a fairer and healthier society

Sunday 8th April

Ever wondered how to bake bread in space? Or what connects molten sugar and micro-meteorite protection? Join Andrew Smyth, Great British Bake Off finalist and aerospace engineer, and learn about the surprising connections between everyday bakes and the extraordinary engineering that keeps astronauts alive in space.

Our Nano World
Sunday 8th April

Hear Dr Olof Johannsson explain how light has the ability to control electrons in molecular magnetic materials and the exciting research into novel experimental techniques to study new phenomena in material science. This interactive workshop will explore how extremely short laser pulses can develop our understanding of new ‘smart’ materials.

A Celebration of Women in Astronomy
Wednesday 11th April

Join Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, first female president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and astrophysicist known for one of the greatest astronomical discoveries of the twentieth century, as she tells the stories of several remarkable women in astronomy and reflects on the position of women in astronomy worldwide today.
