The festival may be over for another year but there is still plenty to see and do in Edinburgh. With the city’s population said to double in August, the following month is a relatively quiet one by comparison making it the perfect time of year to visit the Scottish capital. Luna Outdoor Cinema

1st – 3rd September

As the summer draws to a close, grab a blanket, a beer and cosy up under the stars at one of Edinburgh’s most exciting outdoor film screenings. For three nights only, The Luna Cinema will transform the city’s Royal Botanic Gardens into an open-air cinema, screening Hollywood favourites The Jungle Book, Dirty Dancing and the Oscar-winning La La Land.

OVO Energy Tour of Britain

3rd September

For the first time ever, Scotland’s capital will host the start of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain. The race which is the UK’s biggest professional cycling event will see the world’s top cyclists travel the length and breadth of Great Britain within seven days. The 188km opening leg will depart from St Giles’ Cathedral at 10:30am and head towards the Scottish Borders, finishing in the town of Kelso.

HSBC City Ride

3rd September

The HSBC City Ride is a family friendly event inviting spectators of the Tour of Britain to hop on their bikes and ride on the same roads as the professionals. Beginning shortly after the cyclists of the Tour of Britain depart, this free event allows amateur cyclists to experience the city in a new way whilst enjoying the closed-off traffic free routes.

Riding of the Marches

17th September

In a spectacular cavalcade featuring over 250 horses, the Edinburgh Riding of the Marches is an age old tradition dating back to 1579. Making its way up the Royal Mile towards the Mercat Cross, it commemorates Scotland’s defeat at the Battle of Flodden in 1513 and the moment the Captain of the Trained Band returned with this tragic news.

The Ivy on the Square

20th September

From the group behind the world-famous The Ivy, London’s well-known celebrity hotspot, The Ivy on the Square is the latest addition to Edinburgh’s thriving food and drink scene. Launching later this month, this vibrant and sophisticated restaurant will be located on the corner of St Andrew Square, an area that is fast becoming popular among local foodies.

23rd & 24th September

Now in its 27th year, Edinburgh’s Doors Open Day allows visitors to explore some of the city’s most unique and interesting buildings which are normally closed to the public. This 3-day event is free to attend with many venues offering behind the scenes tours, exhibitions and talks to bring the history of the buildings to life.
